Experimental Magnus Characteristics of Several Ballistic Projectiles with Various Boattail Angles and Lengths at Mach Numbers 1.5, 2.0, and 1.5

An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the effects of boattail angle, the boattail length, and the base diameter on the Magnus- force and moment characteristics of spin-stabilized projectiles. The models were tested at Mach numbers 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 over an angle-of-attack range from -2 to 8 deg. Data were obtained at length Reynolds numbers of 2,440,000, 9,600, 000, and 17,530,000, and for spin parameter pd2V sub infinity values of 0.024 to about 0.270 radians. Results are presented showing the effects of spin, Mach number, angle of attack, boattail geometry, and Reynolds number.
