In the classical treatment of allocation of search effort as developed by Koopman in another paper, the target is stationary and the knowledge about its position is given by an a priori target location distribution. It is assumed moreover that the search vehicle is equipped with a single sensor and that characteristics of the search sensor are known. In particular, one assumes that the sweep width of the sensor is known. In this memorandum, the authors investigate the effect of uncertainty in the sweep width upon the mean time to find the target and upon the optimal strategy for minimizing the mean time to find the target.
