Factors influencing the performance effectiveness of interacting groups are examined, with emphasis on the role of group interaction in affecting group productivity. Current research and thought about the functions of group interaction are reviewed. It is suggested that existing conceptual and methodological tools may severely limit the development of knowledge about how interaction affects group performance. An alternative framework for research on group effectiveness is proposed. The major functions of group interaction in enhancing and depressing group effectiveness are explored within this framework, and a set of strategies for improving group performance by alteration of input factors is presented. Finally, implications for research and for action steps aimed at improving group performance effectiveness are drawn and explored. Modified author abstract
