The purpose of the program was to improve the useful life of a linear pulsed light source for pumping dye lasers. The lamp arc length was 2 inches. The operating conditions were as follows pulse length 2 microsec pulse energy 4 J, pulse repetition rate 220 pps, desired useful life 8,000,000 pulses. Performance data for a standard lamp was established. The cathode and the method of operating the lamp appear to be the most important factors in extending lamp life. It was also found that a higher lamp fill pressure and a smaller diameter lamp bore improved the lamp output.
