Mission success is treated as a linear function of effective mission duration or time on station, which is assumed to be less than or equal to some planned mission duration. The mission success function is equated to the ratio of effective mission duration to planned mission duration. The expectation of effective mission duration is obtained by integrating the mission reliability function over the planned mission interval. The expectation of mission success, then, equates to the mean value of the mission reliability function on the planned mission interval. Mission reliability is expressed as a function of unit failure rates, redundancy, maintainability in the mission environment, and the on-board spares inventory. A series of mathematical expressions provides the basis for a deterministic model to be used for the optimization of the probabilityexpectation of mission success. Author
