The paper reviews the state of the art of small refrigerators that may be capable of performing in space with a high degree of reliability. Candidate cooling systems vary from open-cycle concepts for missions of short duration up to one year to mechanical concepts for missions that are projected to be operational for several years. Performance predictions for both types of concepts are described. Three mechanical systems are emphasized the high-speed turbine concept, the heat-driven Vuilleumier VM concept, and the rotary reciprocating concept. The predictions and the factors that have impact on the acceptance of those predictions are discussed. Author
