It is shown that transfer matrices can be derived from finite elements to provide an efficient approach for structural analysis of complicated structures with a principal direction. This new substructing technique is particularly appropriate for ship structures. The method is demonstrating using transfer matrices formed with the aid of the finite element program ELAS. Author
