Analysis of VUV and X-Ray Lasers Pumped by a Traveling-Wave Source.

A numerical analysis is made to account for the intensity of amplified spontaneous emission ASE as a function of the length of the amplifying medium pumped by a traveling-wave photon source. Details of the analysis are given for sodium vapor at 372 A pumped by a broad band traveling-wave photon source. A calculation is also included to determine the feasibility of produceing ASE at 372 A with a 100 eV black-body like source produced, for example, by an exploding wire. Results indicate that ASE is not feasible with exploding wire technology unless the presently available intensity or rise time can be improved by a factor of ten. Results are also given for amplifying K alpha emission from aluminum and copper at 7.84 A and 1.54 A, respectively. Modified author abstract
