The authors explain the use of large sample theory in comparing families of test statistics, tracing the use of increasingly powerful mathematics and the establishment of the asymptotic optimality of likelihood ratio tests during the past generation. Robbins empirical Bayes model is then presented and discussed in comparison with structural parameter models as well as standard Bayesian models. Author
