Fracture mirrors formed in as received, annealed and quenched flint glass rods fractured under normal strength measurement and impact loading rates were compared. The objectives of the investigation were to determine the effect of methods of mirror measurement, loading conditions and residual stresses on fracture mirror size and shape and to demonstrate the usefulness of mirror measurements for estimating the fracture stresses in glass specimens when other means of estimating the stresses were not available.
