Two miniature closed-cycle refrigerators have been evaluated for potential application in future infrared devices. Although designed to meet the same performance specifications, the two units are significantly different. One is an integrated Stirling cycle the other employs a split compressor-expander with pneumatic displacer drive. The specified thermal performance was approached, but additional development work is required to meet system requirements. Mechanical problems relating to the brush-type DC motors are discussed. Included are mechanical and thermal analyses, test results and recommendations for future development. In addition, performance data of HgCdTe detectors mounted on the coolers are given.
