Effect of Electron Irradiation on Mechanical Properties and Structure of Aluminum,

Samples of aluminum of varying degrees of purity 99.9 and 99.99 were irradiated with 2.3 MeV electrons at room temperature. The irradiation rate was 1 x 10 to the 14th power electronsq cm x sec and the dose range 2.5-7.2 x 10 to the 18th power electronsq cm. Tensile strength testing of the irradiated samples showed a noticeable change in mechanical properties of the aluminum 99.9. This change is connected with the discovery of accumulations of point defects in these samples, which were effective stops to movement of dislocations.
