Results of studies conducted in two research areas are reported. Experimental studies aimed at developing a c.w. atomic I laser at 1.315 micrometers explored several excitation mechanisms that lead to the production of the excited state of Idoublet P12. These included electronic energy transfer from electronically excited O2singlet Deltag, and chemical reactions such as O H II yielding OH I that produce doublet P12 directly. Preliminary evidence that E to V transfer behavior O2singlet Deltag and hydrogen halide molecules occurs is presented. A second study of new systems suitable for optical pumping in the infrared combined theoretical prediction of several suitable systems of laser source and molecule to be pumped, with experimental verification of optical pumping. The results lead to the recognition that absorption on a combination band is not a suitable optical pumping scheme in the usual case. Author
