A theory is developed that takes advantage of the inherent configurational symmetries of aircraft and guided missiles to eliminate some force and moment derivatives. Starting with the Principle of Material Indifference, tensor analysis is employed to derive two simple conditions for vanishing aerodynamic derivatives. The results apply to derivatives of arbitrary order, taken with respect to linear and angular velocities, linear accelerations, and control surface deflections. Two charts are presented that sift out the vanishing derivatives up to second order for missiles with tetragonal symmetry and up to third order for aircraft with reflectional symmetry. Author
