The effect of an external radiation field with arbitrary spectral composition on an electron which is moving in the field of a monochromatic plane electromagnetic wave first wave is considered. The change in the average energy of a relativistic electron in its interaction with a radiation field is studied. Conditions are found for which the acceleration of an electron because of an external field balances the loss of energy of the electron in self-radiation.
