Networks and network related problems occur with remarkable frequency in practical applications. Surprisingly, however, they often go unrecognized even by relatively seasoned modelers, who resort to more cumbersome formulations that may be virtually impossible to solve--or, if solvable, require excessive amounts of computer time and storage. The paper presents a variety of applications from industry and government that illustrate the scope and usefulness of network related formulations. In addition, the authors report recent breakthroughs in specialized methods that are capable of solving problems in only a few minutes that require many hours of computing time with commercial LP packages.
