An Audio Display of Processed Acoustic Signals.

An audio display system using eight tones to encode the output of a digital signal processor is investigated. The purpose of the system is to detect and display an audio tone masked by bandlimited Gaussian noise. The digital processor performs a spectral analysis on the signal using a Fast Fourier Transform. Several hundred experiments were performed using a human listener to monitor the display. The experimental system is capable of displaying the difference between signal, no signal, and signal plus noise conditions. About 80 probability of correct decision by the human observer was achieved for input signals below the detection threshold for an unaided listener.
