Abstract:

The rapidly growing frozen vegetable industry of California affords a unique opportunity to assess the relationships between the industrys two primary participants, the independent grower and the frozen food processing company. Intrinsically linked to this matter is the basis on which the processing company determines the quality of the produce, its actual or predicted recoverable proportion, the amount of remuneration due the grower, and the overall accuracy of this process. In seeking to establish a more consistent, accurate, and timely means of predicting actual production output, the use of statistical sampling and grading has become prevalent in the industry. The thesis attempts to evaluate a procedure for predictive analysis of one commodity in order to demonstrate the utility of this procedure for a wide range of productive processes.
