A digital data transmission experiment conducted between the NASARosman ground station and an FAA KC-135 jet airplane at L-band via the geostationary NASA ATS-5 satellite is described. Sixteen tests were conducted during March and April 1973. All tests employed PSK transmission of alphanumeric text and pseudonoise sequences over the link to obtain a quantitative comparative evaluation of CPSK, DECPSK, and DPSK detection techniques. Significant results included performance characterization of the detection techniques for both the AWGN channel and the Rician fading channel in the presence of overocean multipath. Reception of messages using slot dipole antennas on the aircraft was also successfully demonstrated. Results are presented and discussed relative to theoretical expectation. Author
