The report describes a series of behavioral studies, using British Army personnel, on a number of different orthophotomap products. User performance with six graphic forms of orthophotomaps each surprinted with two levels of annotation was examined in three environmental settings. This included performance under high and low levels of illumination in the map-room, and day-time performance in the field. The performance tasks concentrated on the users ability to detect, identify and recognize various features depicted on the map including object identification, height estimation and terrain visualization for the map-room studies, and direction orientation, self location and mapfield intercorrelations in the field study.
