An investigation was carried out on the dynamics of electrons in an electric and magnetic field. The density of states operator was applied to two models. The problem of a free electron in an electric and the problem of a harmonic oscillator are treated with the potential energy as a perturbation. These two problems can be considered as good models for a solid in an electric and magnetic field correspondingly. An interesting result was obtained for the motion of an electron in a crystal in the presence of an electric field. The energy uncertainty was calculated for the most general one-band wave packet. It was shown that this energy uncertainty is at least on the order of the Stark ladder spacing eEa. For the Bloch electron in a magnetic field the kq-representation was applied for investigating the symmetry properties of the problem. Author
