Abstract:

Chemiluminescence is observed when solutions of tetramethyl-1,2-dioxetane 1 are heated. Recent research has been direct toward elucidation of the mechanism of the chemiexcitation step which converts the exothermicity of decomposition of 1 into electronic excitation which then eventuates in light emission. The chemiluminescence from solutions of 1 can be employed as a powerful tool in the study of reaction mechanisms and can be used to develop novel and efficient chemiluminescent systems.
