The Navy Clothing and Textile Research Unit NCTRU investigated the ability of static electrical discharges to ignite gaseous fuelair mixtures. Brass points and spheres of various radii as well as human fingertips were used as electrodes. It was found that ignitions could readily be obtained from clothing-generated static electrical discharges even at quite moderate relative humidity levels. Pointed metallic electrodes produced ignitions at the lowest electrical discharge energy levels. Modified author abstract
