Abstract:
Monte Carlo calculations were run to determine the effect of multiple scattering in the atmosphere on the return signal measured by a Mark VIII ruby lidar system for fogs with meteorological ranges of 80, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 2100 meters. The multiple scattering calculations were made using the TPART-3 Monte Carlo procedure which treats time-dependent light scattering in the atmosphere for collimated sources and receivers. The TPART-3 procedure is described and the results of calculations run to determine time-dependent single and multiple scattered fluxes at the receiver for a ruby lidar are presented for fogs with meteorological ranges between 80 and 2100 meters.
