A full-size breadboard model of a laser range light was built and installed in the St. Marys River south of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The system was evaluated for its potential as an operational aid to marine navigation. The beam from the laser was aimed horizontally over the water. The light scattered by particles in the air formed a beam, or range line, in the sky which could be followed by a mariner. The operating characteristics of this system are presented and design problems are discussed. Author
