The ANUYK-17XB-1V Signal Processing Element SPE was developed at the Naval Research Laboratory to provide a high performance processing facility for radar, sonar, and communications systems. The design of the microprogrammable SPE enables realization of efficient, flexible solutions to problems which arise in digital signal processing tasks. The SPE is intended to be compatible with the Navy All Applications Digital Computer AADC now under development, and will be implemented as part of the AADC system. The SPE can also be used as a stand-alone processor. The SPE is a collection of several interconnected components. This report describes the organization of the SPE, explaining how SPE components are interconnected and how they interact in order to accomplish a signal processing task. Furthermore, detailed register-level descriptions of the programmable SPE components -- the Microprogrammed Control Unit MCU and the Signal Processing Arithmetic Unit SPAU -- are presented.
