Abstract:

Two aspects of distributing national food supplies to local consumers are addressed. First, food distribution in the immediate postattack period is examined. Alternatives for a meeting geographic supplydemand imbalances and b augmenting or bypassing damaged local food wholesalers are identified and compared. The comparisons indicate that large capital expenditures could be required before attack to assure effective postattack food distribution. However, reliance on improvised postattack food distribution measures may meet the needs of the surviving population. A critical issue is the time required to restore the national transportation system after attack. Second, food distribution to populations that have evacuated risk areas in the crisis period that might precede a nuclear attack is examined. Modified author abstract
