The determination of the unknown functions governing aquifer behavior, especially the transmissibility function, is studied. The behavior of the aquifer is considered to be governed by a two dimensional linear parabolic differential equation. The inverse or identification problem is to determine the unknown functions in the above differential equation by observations on the aquifer potentials. The identification of the unknown transmissiblity function is formulated in a variational framework, consisting of minimizing a certain error functional. The above problem is not well posed without restrictions on the function spaces. Modified author abstract
