Abstract:
Extensions of the investigations aimed at preventing aircraft destruction through the effects of hydraulic ram were conducted. By analyzing spark shadowgraphs the existence of a family of transient shock waves was confirmed. These shock waves were created by a surface anomaly in a projectile and are not unlike those found in fragmentary warheads. In an attempt to measure wall deflections subsequent to projectile impact, a system based on optical fiber proximity probes was investigated. Mathematical models based on grid distortions were used as a means of calculating shock wave pressures. The AFIT thesis correlating cavity size, energy and radius to underwater explosions was verified from an analysis of 16 mm films. Author
