Abstract:
In order to determine the cause of the low-frequency sound attenuation anomaly in seawater, comparative measurements are being made in freshwater. The Lake Tanganyika experiment was conducted to determine the temperature dependency of the anomaly and to overcome the depth limitations of the previous Lake Superior experiment. The sound propagation run was conducted along a 275km track with an average water depth of 750m. Attenuation coefficients were obtained for center frequencies between 800-10,000 Hz in 13-oct bands. The results show excess attenuation, but no relaxation frequency can be defined. Comparison is made between the Lake Superior and Lake Tanganyika experiments. Author
