Abstract:
The work described in the report is the final years effort of a three-year program to study wide bandwidth laser communications at 0.16- micrometer wavelengths. Earlier efforts of this program during the first two years were directed to studying the means to produce a high-efficiency, single- frequency neodymium doped yttrium aluminum garnet NdYAG laser operating at 1. 06 micrometer, and to produce high-efficiency, octave-bandwidth, microwave light modulators for this wavelength. In addition, a study was also made of laser communication configurations that were suitable for very high data rates. The overall objective of this years program, then, is to apply the results of these earlier studies to assemble a laboratory communication system that uses the entire modulation bandwidth available. In particular, the final result of this program is to be a laboratory demonstration of a laser-communication system having a bandwidth of 2 GHz.
