Principal component analysis, eigenvalue-eigenvector decomposition of array spectral matrices, has been proposed by several authors as a technique for the separation of the signal components of mixed signals observed at an array since the eigenvectors of the spectral matrix often resemble signal delay vectors. This report is a critical evaluation of the method.
