The objective of the research program was to establish a structure-property correlation by means of detailed studies of the interaction of selected coupling agents with aluminum and titanium adherends and with epoxy and polyimide resins. The report describes the results obtained during the first year. The study focused on four coupling agents of the type XSiOR3 where X is an organofunctional group. Detailed adsorption data was obtained on three of the four compounds studied, namely those with X C2H5, CH2CH and NH2CH2CH2CH2 and RC2H5. Physical studies of the interaction of these agents, plus CH2OCH2-Ch2-O-CH23 Si-OCH33, with pure aluminum, 2024-T3 aluminum alloy, pure Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy were carried out and the results interpreted.
