The rare earth-cobalt permanent magnets owe their utility to a favorable combination of properties - high Curie temperatures, large saturation magnetizations and strong magnetic anisotropies. The anisotropy is a crystal field effect. The strength of the crystal field effect can be obtained by a suitable combination of of theoretical and experimental work. The major experimental approach used in the present work is the study of low temperature heat capacities which leads to an evaluation of the crystal field interaction. The effect of alloying on the anisotropy of R2Co17 compounds is presented for a number of systems. The theoretical work carried out, making use of the operator equivalent method, enables one to predict the sign of the anisotropy for RCo5 compounds. Author
