Abstract:

The report deals with the formulation of a general expression for calculating planar-nozzle discharge coefficients cd. The expression is in terms of constants whose values depend only on geometry and are directly calculable from a simple solution of the Karman-Pohlhausen momentum integral equations. The assumption of one-dimensional inviscid flow to determine the free-stream velocities and pressure distributions is shown to be valid by the good agreement with observation. Measured and theoretically determined discharge coefficients for nozzles of widths from 0.5 to 2.0 mm generally agree to within 4 percent. This is excellent in light of the fact that the normal experimental deviation is about 4. The discharge coefficient cd remains virtually constant for turbulent flow. Modified author abstract
