Following the injection of histamine directly into the supraoptic nucleus, a dramatic decrease in urine flow ensued. This oliguria, and the concomitant increase in urine concentration, reflect the release of vasopressin. This histaminergic effect could be inhibited by an antihistamine, but not an antinicotinic, antimuscarinic or adrenergic blocker. It is suggested that hypothalamic histamine plays an important role in the release of vasopressin. Author
