An Experimental Study of Highlight Suppression in Acoustic Imaging.

The objective of this program was to experimentally investigate the effectiveness of highlight suppression techniques in improving acoustic imaging. Two Bendix-developed methods, a weak signal enhancement technique WSET and a null processing technique, were used for this work. The results obtained verify that WSET does work in practice and is effective when the strong image e.g., a bottom reverberation is spatially separated from the desired weak image. Null processing was shown to be useful for highlight reduction in acoustic imaging, although the results were not particularly dramatic in most of the experiments. The best results would be expected when the range is greater so that detail closer to the highlight needs to be examined. Modified author abstract
