To date, the main findings of this investigation indicate the acute hypoxic stress 1.5 hr. to PO2 34mmHg does not markedly accelerate glucose uptake, decrease lipid synthesis, deplete tissue glycogen, or shut down citric acid cycle activity with a concomitant decrease in glucose and fatty acid oxidation effects commonly seen in other organs. Thus, the lung appears to be more resistant to hypoxic stress. Finally, exposure to hyperoxia for 1.5 hr. has little detrimental effect on the metabolic process of the lung. Author
