Observations of the relative intensities of the Lyman lines of hydrogen-like O VIII, Mg XII, and Si XIV in the solar corona have been made by satellite-based x-ray crystal spectrometers and are reported here. A comparison between the experimentally observed values of the intensity ratio of the Lyman alpha to the Lyman beta line Lyman ratio has been made with the recent theoretical predictions of this ratio by Hutcheon and McWhirter for low density plasmas. Good agreement is found between the theory and observations for those times for which we have derived a valid coronal temperature model and applied it to the temperature-dependent theoretical ratio. Observations made at times of greater solar activity appear to be inconsistent with the theory. Author
