Abstract:

A brief but complete summary in narrative form of the mathematical modeling done under the contract, including references to and descriptions of the papers and reports issued. The main areas of work have been temperature stress in surface cooling of window materials, the algorithmic problems involved in the theory of multiphonon absorption in crystals, and the generalization of a new solution to the transport equation to encompass the Markovian anisotropic scattering of electrons in thin films. The solution of the equation for heat conduction in cylinders by the implicit alternating difference method is applied to the production of input data for thermal lensing problems and to a new method of obtaining the bulk absorption coefficient from calorimetric measurements.
