Abstract:

Xenon alters the normal structure of water by forming the xenon-clathrate. The conductivities of pure water and some aqueous solutions were measured at increasing xenon pressures to determine if increasing the degree of water structure affected the mobility of charge propagated species. No such enhancement was found and, in fact, a small decrease was noted. In both pure water and in HCl solutions xenon affected the measured conductivity and a non-reversible pathway was observed with changes in xenon pressure. The conductivity of CsBr solutions was reversible with changes in xenon pressure and the effect is described as a competition for water between the xenon clathrate and hydration sphere of the ions.
