A 15.5-scale model of the A-1 was designed and constructed at the Model Basin from information and photographs gathered at the Bureau of Naval Weapons. All wooden construction, typical of early models, was not strictly adhered to because of economic and structural considerations. The wing and control surface sections were basically of constant thickness. Therefore, nominal thickness metal plates harmonized well with the model scale selected and were relatively easy to form to the desired shapes. Heavy reliance was placed upon the skill of the experienced model artisans in duplicating the design from the limited amount of definite design data. Since the drag and interference of the wires does not accurately scale, duplication of wire bracing was included only as necessary to provide sufficient stiffness of the model for testing.
