The objectives of this program were To analyze the index of refraction of various regions of lasers as a function of the aluminum concentration in AlGaAs so that lasers can be synthesized with optimum radiation patterns in the sense that the power beamwidth will be minimized to produce design curves showing the beamwidth for various laser structures and, to investigate laser structures which produce waveguide modes giving the smallest possible radiation pattern divergence.
