Audio transducers based on the piezoresistive and stressed-transistor principles were investigated for possible use in future tactical communications systems. The goal is to develop small low visibility, light weight, hands-free microphones that can operate satisfactorily in a high noise environment. Although air-pathway noise-cancelling devices are also to be considered, the study focussed on speech pickup through the surface of the head or neck by means of either pressure microphones using air as a coupling medium or vibration transducers using an elastomeric coupling, or more direct contact with the skin.
