Abstract:

Neutron response information for six different gamma ray dosimeters was obtained spanning the energy region from 0.5 to 14.1 MeV. The dosimeters used in the investigation included two types of CaF2Mn thermoluminescent dosimeters TLD, two different forms of LiF TLD employing enriched isotopic concentrations of 6Li and 7Li, and silver-activated metaphosphate glass High Z Composition. Where comparisons with previously published data could be made, the results of this investigation are in good agreement. The 7LiF ribbon dosimeter exhibited a response 10 to 30 times larger than that observed for the other LiF TLDs studied. This effect is unexplained at this time however, due to its obvious significance, it is felt that a more detailed investigation is warranted. The differences in the neutron responses of the other dosimeters can also be a significant factor when making a gamma ray exposure measurement in a mixed radiation environment. The experimenter, therefore, must consider the neutron energy spectrum and the neutron-to-gamma ratio when selecting a dosimeter to use in a specified environment. Author
