Abstract:
Various hypotheses chiefly Frenkels and Elsassers earth dynamo and period of rest theories dealing with inversion phenomena, i.e., change of sign in the terrestrial magnetic field are examined and evaluated mathematically. Calculations, consisting in the application of certain principles and consequences of the theory of characteristic surfaces to a system of wave equations, are developed that show the basic incompatibility of the two following principles, viz., 1 there is a period of rest in the inversion process, and 2 the magnetic field remains analogous to the dipole field during the inversion period.
