The report presents the results of a theoretical study of non- linearities in seismometers. The effects of non-linear elements in the mechanical and electrical parts of the seismometer system were modeled and investigated with particular attention to the transfer of noise power between different regions of the seismic noise spectrum. The seismometer was modeled as a simple second order mechanical system followed by a transducer and an electronic amplifier. The qualitative effects of non-linearities in each of these elements were investigated. A numerical simulation demonstrated the quantitative effects of various non-linearities on the signal-to-noise ratio observed in the low-noise region of the seismic spectrum. Small non-linearities were shown to cause serious loss of signal-to-noise ratio.
