The exploratory research program discussed is directed toward determination of fundamental material parameters descriptive of fracture behavior of adhesive joints. The experimental program utilizes the energy approach to fracture mechanics. Both brittle and ductile adhesives are used, and materials are chemically and mechanically characterized and surface properties measured. Extensive fracture testing is conducted to measure fracture energies under a variety of cyclic fatigue loading and chemical environments typically encountered by aircraft bond joints. Findings of these tests are discussed as are particular technology areas warranting further study. Author-PL
