The advent of rocket and satellite borne EUV and x-ray spectrometers has resulted in a study of the permitted lines of the highly ionized ion in the solar corona and transition region. Models of the coronal temperature and density structure and of coronal abundances have been developed from these observations. However, spectroscopic studies with high spatial resolution are rare, and substantial progress in the study of coronal structure and of the coronal energy balance will require the development of true EUV and x-ray spectroheliographs.
