Axial heating of a high density, initially low beta, theta-pinch plasma by 10.6 micrometer radiation has been demonstrated. A self laser beam trapping, electron density minimum on-axis has been created and maintained by magnetic field shaping and laser heating. A 10-cm long by 6-mm diameter 5 x 10 to the 17th powercc electron density plasma column has been heated from an initial temperature of 10 eV to 100 eV by 50 J of laser energy in 100 nsec. The resulting plasma expansion and on-axis density reduction has been measured by holographic interferometry. Modified author abstract
